# What Is an EOC Test? Florida End-of-Course Exams Explained in Plain English

> EOC means "end-of-course" — a state exam taken once, at the end of the course rather than every year. This explains what Florida EOCs are, which five courses have one, what the 1-5 score means, and which single EOC can stop a student graduating.

**EOC stands for “end-of-course.”** An EOC test is a state exam a student takes once, at the end of a particular course, instead of a yearly test covering everything. If your child is taking Algebra 1, they sit the Algebra 1 EOC in the last weeks of that course and never again (unless they need a retake).

That is the whole definition. The rest of this page is the detail people usually want next.

## Which Florida courses have an EOC?

Five, and only five. Florida’s statewide end-of-course assessments are:

| Course | Standards | Where it is taken |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Algebra 1** | B.E.S.T. | High school — the one that carries a graduation requirement |
| **Geometry** | B.E.S.T. | High school |
| **Biology 1** | NGSSS | High school |
| **U.S. History** | NGSSS | High school |
| **Civics** | NGSSS | Middle school |

**Chemistry, Physics, Algebra 2, English and personal financial literacy have no statewide EOC.** Those finals are written by the district or the teacher, which is why you will not find a state blueprint for them — and why any site selling a “Florida Chemistry EOC practice test” is selling something the state does not give.

## What does “EOC date” mean?

It is the window your district schedules the exam in, not a single national date. Florida sets statewide administration windows — typically a spring window at the end of the school year, plus fall and summer windows for retakes and for students finishing a course off-cycle — and each district picks its own days inside that window. The exact day comes from your school, not from the state and not from us.

## What does the score mean?

Florida EOC results report on a **five-level scale**, not a percentage:

| Level | Name | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Level 1 | Inadequate | Highly likely to need substantial support |
| Level 2 | Below Satisfactory | Likely to need substantial support |
| **Level 3** | **On Grade Level** | **The passing threshold for graduation credit** |
| Level 4 | Proficient | Likely to excel |
| Level 5 | Mastery | Highly likely to excel |

Level 3 is the line that matters. Below it a student has not met the standard; at or above it they have. A fuller breakdown, including how the levels map onto scale-score ranges, is in the [achievement levels reference](https://www.floridacapprep.com/blog/florida-fast-best-achievement-levels-complete-reference).

## Which EOC can stop a student graduating?

One: **Algebra 1**. A student must reach Level 3 on the Algebra 1 EOC — or use a concordant SAT or ACT score instead — to earn a standard diploma. The others count toward the course grade (usually 30% of it) but are not themselves a graduation gate.

If a student does not reach Level 3, they retake it; there is no limit on attempts, and the concordant-score route stays open the whole time.

## EOC vs FAST vs FSA — three names people mix up

- **EOC** is a course exam, taken once, at the end of that course.
- **FAST** (Florida Assessment of Student Thinking) is computer-adaptive progress monitoring given three times a year (PM1, PM2, PM3) in grades 3–10 ELA and 3–8 Math. It is not a course exam.
- **FSA** (Florida Standards Assessments) is the old system. FAST replaced it in 2022–23. If you are reading advice that talks about FSA scores, check its date.
- **B.E.S.T.** is not a test at all — it is the content standards (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking), adopted in 2020 in place of Common Core. FAST and the math EOCs measure B.E.S.T.

## Common questions, short answers

- **Is an EOC the same as a final exam?** It replaces or counts heavily toward one. For the five Florida EOC courses, the state exam typically counts as 30% of the course grade.
- **How many EOC tests are there?** Five statewide in Florida. A student takes only the ones matching the courses they enrol in.
- **Can you use a calculator?** Depends on the exam and the section; Florida provides an on-screen calculator where one is allowed, and a reference sheet for the math EOCs.
- **What happens if you fail?** For Algebra 1, you retake or use a concordant score. For the others, it affects the course grade rather than the diploma.
