It is worth taking seriously. But the conclusion most families reach — that technical subjects matter less now — gets the situation backwards. The subjects that teach a student to reason carefully under constraints have become more load-bearing, not less. The AI-era case for hard STEM courses

The useful mental model is this: AI has collapsed the cost of producing work, and raised the cost of being unable to evaluate it. A student who can generate a solution but cannot tell whether it is sound is now in a worse position than before, because the volume of plausible-looking output has exploded.

What holds value is the ability to hold a whole problem in your head — to know why a method applies, what its assumptions are, and what it would look like if it failed.   • AP® Precalculus — polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. The course that determines whether calculus later feels natural or brutal.
  • AP® Calculus AB — limits, derivatives, integrals and their applications. The single most transferable course on this list.
  • AP® Calculus BC — everything in AB plus series, parametric, polar and vector functions.
  • AP® Physics 1: Algebra-Based — kinematics, forces, energy, momentum, torque and circuits. The first course where students must model a situation rather than apply a formula.
  • AP® Statistics — data exploration, probability, sampling and inference. Chronically underrated, and the most directly useful course for anyone who will work near data or machine learning.
  • AP® Computer Science A — Java programming and code tracing. Reading code carefully is exactly the skill an AI-assisted workflow demands most.

If a student can only take a few, the highest-leverage pairing for most STEM paths is Calculus AB with Statistics, or Calculus with Computer Science A for computing-focused students.

Why this matters specifically in Florida

Florida families have a route many never hear about. Under Florida's Credit Acceleration Program (CAP), established in Florida Statute §1003.4295, a student can earn high school course credit by passing an assessment rather than completing the course. Most discussion of CAP focuses on the statewide End-of-Course (EOC) assessments — Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1 and U.S. History — but the statute also allows credit through a qualifying Advanced Placement exam or a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam for eligible courses.

That matters because it means an AP® exam can do double duty for a Florida student: college credit or placement on one side, and a state-recognized route to high school course credit on the other. The specifics — which courses qualify, and how your district handles the paperwork — are set by Florida law and administered locally, so confirm the details with your school counselor before building a plan around it.

None of this replaces the EOC requirements. A Florida student still needs to clear those. AP® sits on top of that foundation, which is why the sequencing below matters.

A realistic timeline

The most common planning error is stacking AP® courses before the groundwork is stable. A workable shape for most students looks like this:

  • Before AP®: secure Algebra 1 and Geometry, and clear the corresponding EOC requirements. Weakness here does not stay hidden — it resurfaces in Precalculus and again in Physics.
  • First AP® STEM course: usually Precalculus or Computer Science A. Both are approachable without assuming prior AP® experience.
  • Core year: Calculus AB, optionally with Statistics. This is the year that carries the most weight and the most workload.
  • Extension: Calculus BC or Physics 1, depending on direction.

Two or three AP® STEM exams done well is worth far more than five done badly. Scores are visible; the number of courses attempted is not the thing being evaluated.

How to actually study for an AP® exam

Most students prepare by re-reading notes and re-watching lectures. This feels productive and produces very little. What works is uncomfortable and much faster:

  • Practice retrieval, not review. Close the book and reconstruct the idea from memory. The moment of not-quite-remembering is where the learning happens.
  • Do free-response under time, then score yourself against the model answer. This is the highest-value activity available and the one students skip most. Working through a scoring checklist point by point teaches you what graders actually reward — usually explicit reasoning that students leave implicit.
  • Understand why the wrong options are wrong. On multiple-choice, the distractors are built around specific misconceptions. Identifying which one you fell for is more informative than the score.
  • Track accuracy by topic. An overall percentage cannot direct your week. Knowing that related rates sit far below integration tells you exactly where to spend Saturday.
  • Space it out. Sustained work from winter onward beats a spring cram, and it is the difference between a 3 and a 5 for most students.
  • Do not let AI do the reasoning. Using it to check your work after you have committed to an answer is fine. Using it to produce the answer removes the exact struggle the exam measures.

Mistakes worth avoiding

Taking AP® for the transcript alone. A weak score on a hard course helps no one. Choose courses the student can genuinely carry.

Skipping Precalculus. Students who jump into Calculus with shaky function fluency spend the whole year fighting algebra instead of learning calculus.

Ignoring free response until spring. It is the section that separates scores, and it is a skill that takes months, not weeks.

Assuming credit transfers. Credit policies belong to each college. Verify before counting on it.
