Florida Credit Acceleration Program (CAP): Earn Credit by Passing the EOC

Florida has a built-in way to earn high school credit by passing a test instead of sitting through the whole course. It's called the Credit Acceleration Program (CAP), and it's written into Florida Statute §1003.4295. If your student already knows the material, CAP can save a semester — here's exactly how it works.

What CAP is

Under CAP, a school district must award course credit to a student who is not enrolled in the course (or hasn't completed it) if the student passes the corresponding statewide End-of-Course (EOC) assessment. In other words: pass the EOC, get the credit — no need to take the class first.

Which courses (EOC route)

The EOC route applies to the courses that have a statewide EOC:

  • Algebra 1
  • Geometry
  • Biology 1
  • U.S. History

CAP also allows credit through a qualifying Advanced Placement (AP) exam or a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam for eligible courses — useful for courses that don't have an EOC.

Who can use CAP

CAP is open to public school students (including charter school students, since charters are public schools) and to home education students. The district must permit an eligible student to take the assessment during a regular administration of the exam.

What score do you need?

You need to pass the EOCAchievement Level 3 or higher on the 1–5 scale, the same statewide passing standard used for course grades.

Why families use CAP

  • Acceleration: a student ready for the next level doesn't have to wait a full year — earn the credit now and move on.
  • Schedule room: freeing a course slot can open space for electives, dual enrollment, or an extra science/math.
  • Documented credit: the credit appears on the transcript like any earned course credit.

How to set it up

Because the EOC is administered through the school district, start with your school counselor (or, for home education, your county district's home education office). Ask which upcoming testing window you can register for and what the school needs from you. See the 2026–2027 EOC testing dates →

Prepare with free EOC practice

CAP only helps if you actually pass the EOC, so preparation matters. Florida CAP Prep™ offers free sample questions (no signup) and full-length, standards-aligned mock exams with AI explanations:

CAP is a real, low-pressure way to get ahead — and if your student is ready, steady practice makes passing very achievable.
