Algebra 1 EOC in Middle School (Florida): What Families Should Know

Many Florida students take Algebra 1 in middle school (often 7th or 8th grade). When they do, they take the same statewide Algebra 1 End-of-Course (EOC) assessment as high-school students — and passing it early is a real advantage. Here's what middle-school families should know, plus free practice.

It's the same EOC — and it's a graduation requirement

There is one Algebra 1 EOC in Florida, built on the B.E.S.T. math standards. A middle schooler enrolled in Algebra 1 takes it that year, and passing the Algebra 1 EOC is a Florida graduation requirement. So a student who passes it in 7th or 8th grade has already cleared that requirement years early.

How it's scored

The Algebra 1 EOC uses the 1–5 Achievement Level scale; Level 3 or higher passes — the same standard for every student statewide, regardless of grade level. The EOC also counts toward the Algebra 1 course grade, and passing earns high school credit (Algebra 1 is a high-school-credit course even when taken in middle school).

Why taking Algebra 1 early helps

  • Graduation requirement met early — one less thing to worry about in high school.
  • High-school credit on the transcript before 9th grade.
  • The math ladder opens up: Algebra 1 → Geometry → Algebra 2 → Pre-Calculus → Calculus. Starting early makes reaching Calculus (and AP math) much more doable.

Is the middle-school EOC harder or easier?

It's the same test with the same passing bar. Middle schoolers in Algebra 1 are ready for it — they're taking the course. The key is steady preparation with real, EOC-style questions, not the student's grade level.
